Is Your Dog's Care Routine Enough? 8 at-Home Steps to a Healthy Dog

Disclaimer: It's important to note that I am not a veterinarian. The following routine is a personal account of how I care for my dog's health. Monthly (Weekly, Daily) Dog Health Maintenance Routine

Properly caring for your dog involves more than just feeding and playing with them. Regular maintenance is crucial for their overall health and happiness. Here's a detailed routine to help keep your furry companion in optimal condition:

1. Administer Ivermectin – Monthly

Ivermectin can be used as a preventative measure against heartworms and to control other parasites. However, the dosage and suitability for your dog should be determined by your veterinarian, as some breeds have sensitivities to this medication.

2. Give Pyrantel – Monthly

Pyrantel pamoate is effective in treating intestinal worms like hookworms and roundworms. Your veterinarian can guide the correct dosage based on your dog's size and health status (typically 1 ml per 10 pounds).

3. Apply a Generic Form of Frontline Plus – Monthly

This treatment helps protect your dog from fleas and ticks. Be sure to apply it according to the product instructions, and consult your veterinarian to ensure it's appropriate for your dog, especially if they have a history of skin sensitivity.

4. Bath with The Coat Handler Undercoat Control Deshedding Shampoo – Monthly Minimum, Up to Daily

Bathing your dog with this specific shampoo can help control and reduce shedding while keeping their coat healthy and shiny. Ensure the water temperature is comfortable, and thoroughly rinse the shampoo out to prevent irritation.

5. Trim and File Nails – Monthly Minimum, Weekly for Best Results

Using Resco clippers and a cordless Dremel Micro with LED lighting, carefully trim your dog's nails, avoiding cutting the quick, which can cause pain and bleeding. After clipping, use the Dremel Micro to smooth out rough edges, helping prevent snagging.

6. Brush Coat – Monthly Minimum, Weekly Better, Daily for Best Results

Regularly brushing your dog's coat with a slicker brush and an undercoat rake is essential. The slicker brush helps remove tangles and mats, while the undercoat rake effectively thins out and removes loose fur from the undercoat. This step promotes cleanliness and allows you to inspect the skin for irregularities or pests.

7. Clean Ears with Oti-Rinse – Monthly Minimum, Weekly for Best Results

Ear cleaning is vital, especially for dogs prone to ear infections. Oti-Rinse, containing benzyl alcohol, salicylic acid, benzoic acid, and lactic acid, can help maintain ear health by preventing the buildup of wax and debris. Use as directed and consult your veterinarian if you notice any signs of ear infection or discomfort.

8. Brush Teeth – Monthly Minimum, Weekly Better, Daily for Best Results

Dental health is as crucial for dogs as it is for humans. Use Virbac CET toothpaste with a Philips Sonicare Diamond Clean toothbrush to brush your dog's teeth. This routine can help prevent dental diseases and keep their breath fresher.
