How is my dog pregnant?!

Recently, I had a past puppy buyer ask about false pregnancies. False pregnancies (also known as pseudopregnancies) are not unusual. Frequently, they occur anywhere from 4 to 12 weeks after the start of her heat. They are prevalent in unspayed females but can also occur in spayed females! During a false pregnancy, a dog might show signs similar to those of an actual pregnancy, such as:

  • Enlarged mammary glands

  • Milk production

  • Nesting behavior

  • Mothering of stuffed toys

These symptoms are caused by hormonal changes in the dog's body, particularly increased progesterone and prolactin, which happen after a heat cycle. Typically, the symptoms of a false pregnancy will resolve on their own within 2 to 3 weeks. No specific treatment is usually necessary, although avoiding certain actions like belly rubs or milk expression is essential, as these can exacerbate the symptoms by stimulating further milk production.

If you notice your dog experiencing significant discomfort, water and food can be mildly restricted for several days. Utilizing an Elizabethan Collar or putting a t-shirt on the bitch may suppress licking and self-stimulation of lactation.

If the symptoms are severe or persist beyond a few weeks, it would be advisable to consult a veterinarian to ensure everything is okay and to discuss the best care for your pet during this time.
