Piper's Wins
In the fall 2022, I entered Piper in six AKC Master Hunt tests. She passed five of the tests and became an AKC Master Hunter. The first Master Hunt test Piper did in fall 2022, she scored all 8s. On her second test, she scored 9 – Hunting, 9 – Bird Finding Ability, 10 – Pointing, 9 – Trainability, 9-Retrieving, 9- Honoring. During that test, Piper's brace mate needed an honor. Piper pointed a quail
from about 15 feet away and held steady.
While waiting for the brace mate to come around, the quail volunteered (Piper did not move a single paw). Because the brace mate would need to honor through a retrieve by Piper, the judge asked if he could throw down a dead bird in front of Piper. Little did I know he would THROW the bird hard right in front of Piper. She did not move a paw. Next, the judge came back again and said we have a live bird now, so he's going to pick up that dead one and put a live bird in its place. Piper stayed steady, not moving a paw.
Finally, the brace mate came around and stole Piper's point, establishing his own point one foot from the bird. The judge said to flush the bird.
So I went in and flushed the quail. The brace mate broke and chased the quail at full speed. Piper still has not moved a single paw! I told Piper, “gone away” and Piper heeled away at my side. That point was truly special and earned Piper a 10.
In Piper’s third test, she scored four 8s and two 7s. Piper’s fourth test, she scored all 9s. Piper peaked a hill during her fourth test and saw her brace mate on point. Piper instantly froze without taking a single step and focused on her honor. She was about 45 yards from the dog pointing; it appeared to be a perfect honor to me, but she only scored a 9. On the fifth test, Piper broke on the shot. She had not made that mistake in a long time, but somehow she thought she was sent to retrieve it. Oh well, DQ on that test.
On the sixth test, Piper scored five 8s and one 9. The gunner of that run gave me his contact information and said he wanted a puppy out of Piper. A genuine compliment knowing AKC hunt test gunners see hundreds of dogs run. Piper worked hard in training, and I was proud of her performance and outstanding scores.
